From the moment Apple unveiled its iPhone a few months ago, it was clear that the phone’s innovative touch-screen control system was going to appear in the iPod as well. And now, at the same time as the phone's UK launch, the iPod Touch has appeared.    More

Behind this product's fairly silly name lurks a capable media player. The Angora VX435 can play music (MP3 and WMA) and video (AVI, Divx, Mpeg and others) files, and includes a 120GB hard disk on which to store them.    More

As Apple iPhone fans who don't want to sign up for a new phone, we were hoping the Apple iPod touch would be the perfect compromise. Based on its specs (Wi-Fi, mobile Safari, the multitouch interface, and twice the Apple iPhone's storage capacity at 16GB), it sure looks like it would be.    More

Sleek, light and beautifully designed, this successor to the Archos 604 WiFi ups the ante in several ways. The screen resolution and battery life have both been boosted and there's more storage on offer - the 605 range goes all the way up to a mighty 160GB, although we tested the 30GB version. In other respects, however, Archos largely sticks to a winning formula.    More

"First look: Apple iPod classic"

There's no getting around the fact: Apple's iPod line - last updated a year ago - was in dire need of a refresh heading into this week's press event in San Francisco. And Apple provided that refresh in spades, updating all its existing iPod offerings and adding a new music player to the mix. That newcomer, the iPod touch, is the subject of its own profile elsewhere on this site. In this article, we'll take a closer look at the changes and enhancements to the existing iPod video, which has been renamed the iPod classic.    More

When writing about the multimedia capabilities of the iPhone this summer, I called it "the iPod that's really a phone". You could say that the iPod touch - introduced by Apple this week as part of its overhauled music player line - is the iPhone that's really an iPod. After all, the touchscreen iPod shares much of the interface and design of the iPhone. The iPod touch won't ship until later in September. So like everyone else who attended this week's press event, I left the Moscone Center without one of these new iPods in hand. However, I spent enough quality time twirling, tapping and pressing my way around each iPod's interface in Apple's demo area. Here are some first impressions.    More

The first thing you'll notice about the third-generation Apple iPod nano is its 2in display. How can you not? The display occupies more than half of the device - fitting, considering that one of the big selling points of the nano is it can now play video in addition to music.    More

Almost a full two years since its last full-size iPod, Apple has unleashed the iPod classic. Coming in 80GB and 160GB capacities -- costing £159 and £229 respectively -- the classic can hold a massive archive of music and video. There's no need to pick and choose which music goes with you, even if you rip CDs at the very highest lossless quality. We wasted no time in stress-testing the classic to within millimetres of its life. The classic is available now from Apple stores or the company's Web site.    More

There's a lot going on in the premium MP3 player market at the moment. What with the launch of the iPod touch, classic and nano, and a pair of DAB radio-based flash players from iRiver and Cowon appearing in the past week or so, it's beginning to feel a bit like the kitchen in a one-bedroom flat at a late night party. Just when you thought that no-one else could possibly squeeze themselves in, along comes the Archos 605 Wi-Fi, sidling its way into the room. It's true -- the third-generation iPod shuffle (1GB) is the lowest-profile MP3 player we've laid eyes on. Apple may have been slow out of the gate, but the company has succeeded in launching perhaps the tiniest and simplest player on the market -- and it sports a price tag to match: £49, down from £55 for the second gen.    More

The moment the iPhone first saw the light of day, observers wondered how long it would take before a redesigned iPod based on the iPhone form factor followed. The answer, as it turned out, was about two-and-a-half months. The iPod touch, along with a redesigned iPod nano and the iPod classic, was unveiled at a special event on September 5. Apple said that its latest digital audio player would become available towards the end of September, but eight days later reports began trickling in that the 16GB iPod touch was available in limited quantities at Apple Stores.    More

Try as hard as you like, you cannot deny that Apple has an uncanny ability to keep on making great products. Every time you think it's impossible to make improvements to their iPod music players, along comes another revamp that raises the bar yet again. And with the design and desirability of the latest batch, it has excelled itself once again, especially with the new nano. Unless you've been hiding under a rock for the past week or so, you'll know roughly what it looks like. In order to accommodate the bigger screen, it's both shorter and wider than the previous nano - 52 x 70 x 6.5mm (WxHxD) to be precise.    More

iPods iPods iPods! That was the theme of Apple's September 5 event, titled "The Beat Goes On." And as expected, what came out of the event was all sorts of iPod news: the shuffles got new colors, the iPod touch (touchscreen iPod) made its debut, and Apple updated its old standbys, the iPod classic and iPod nano. This review focuses on the latter two in the list, because they both saw the same general changes to physical design and also use the same new UI. We will go over the physical differences of each iPod separately first and then address the UI as a whole.    More
