"Pioneer VSX-920-K review"
1 Receiver (approx. £500)
Expert Reviews
Published on 8/2010
On test: Pioneer VSX-920
"The VSX-920-K is a fairly expensive AV receiver and it's one the most sophisticated we've seen. There are nine 140W speaker outputs, giving 7.1 surround plus stereo in another room. All video sources can be fed to the HDMI output, which simplifies cabling when using analogue devices. There's an Ethernet port to feed the internet radio function, plus a port for an optional Bluetooth audio receiver." Review details: Single test.    Test results

On test: Samsung HW-C500
"AV receivers aren't high on the list of things you'd associate with Samsung, but the Korean giant has been turning out a nice line in home cinema amps for quite some time. Its latest range includes this entry-level 5.1-channel model, which is designed to provide a basic introduction to the world of surround sound – a fact reflected by its low price tag." Receivers

In Hi-Fi terms, a “receiver” is the combination of a radio and sound system. Modern receivers are the central interface between a stereo, DVD player, television and other multimedia devices, and provide the core of a home theater system. Digital receivers work with special surround sound techniques that allow several speakers – usually five – to be controlled individually. A remote control which can control the rest of the connected devices such as the television is usually included with the device. High-quality receivers also have the ability to modify their most important settings through the TV using a GUI. This is much more comfortable than using the small screen on the device itself. Most receivers are Surround receivers. This means that they can control the speakers individually, thus creating a spatial sound impression. They are mainly used for playing movies. Stereo receivers, however, work with the two-channel method and are meant for playing music. The speakers must thus be arranged in a different manner, as the reproduction of stereo sound is very different from surround sound. Pure stereo receivers, however, are not widely available commercially, and the majority of devices are Surround devices, which are also capable of stereo reproduction.
