Panasonic TX-P42X10
"excellent" (5 out of 5 stars)
For the price, and this is one of the cheapest in this test, Panasonic's TX-P42X10 42" Plasma TV offers exceptional image performance, though being only HD-Ready the difference is obvious. Sound is not exceptional, but there are plenty of Full-HD models around for similar cost that are nowhere near as accomplished.

Panasonic Viera TX-P42G10
"excellent" (5 out of 5 stars)
A good and wide range of features and specs including Freesat make Panasonic's TX-P42G10 42" Plasma TV one of the leaders in this test. Unwavering and crisp images are let down by unremarkable sound, and the design looks heavy next to some of the others. Still, a superb device for the price.

Philips 42PES0001D/10
"excellent" (5 out of 5 stars)
"Supertest Winner"
Quite simply the most attractive screen in this test, Philip's 42PES001 42" LCD TV also comes up with beautiful images from any source. The only drawback to this is the price and it also needs time to be set up for best advantage. Even if it's outside your budget, include it in your next audition of screens.
1
Samsung UE40B7020
"excellent" (5 out of 5 stars)
Another beautifully designed screen, Samsung's UE40B7020 40" LCD TV also has breath of specs, superb backlighting and very competent image reproduction. Charging extra for the wireless DNLA dongle and unattractive remote go against this device. The price however, is completely worth what it provides.
5
Sony Bravia KDL-40W5500
"very good" (4 out of 5 stars)
Sony's KDL-40W5500 40" LCD TV is a standout for Blu-ray, particularly in motion reproduction. Backlighting however has some inconsistency, which loses this model its fifth star, and the TV-tuners are nothing special.
6
LG Electronics 42LH7000
"average" (3 out of 5 stars)
Not one of the high-performing models in this test, but that is more a reflection on the quality to be found currently. LG's 42LH7000 42" LCD TV is in no way of poor quality, though the pictures tend to be soft and sound could be better. Good enough, but then the competition is better.
6
Sharp Aquos LC42DH77
"average" (3 out of 5 stars)
Sharp's LC42DH77 42" LCD TV looks very good on paper with its comprehensive specs and an affordable price. In practice, the payoff is mediocre image and sound, and an unattractive magenta cast on the screen. An unmemorable TV made to look even more so by the quality of the other models here.
6
Toshiba 42ZV555D
"average" (3 out of 5 stars)
With some time taken to tweak the settings, Toshiba's 42ZV555DB 42" LCD TV manages to produce stable images even at motion and with good colour, contrast and blacks. The TV tuners are unremarkable and audio disappointing. Compared to the leaders in this test this device doesn't manage to keep up.
